Terms of Service
Last updated:
Your vault, your responsibility. Use nkey lawfully, protect your devices and recovery information, and keep backups you can restore. nkey does not operate a hosted vault or a password-reset service. The online preview is a demo for fictional data.
1. About these terms
These Terms govern the nkey website, interactive preview and related services provided by Flavio Aiello (digitalcommons.ch), Switzerland (“we”, “us”). They also explain the responsibilities and limits relevant to the nkey app, browser extension and native companion where available.
By using the website or services, you agree to these Terms. You must have the legal capacity to do so, or the permission of a parent or guardian where required. If you use nkey for an organization, you must have authority to act for it.
Software licence rights are preserved. Use, modification and distribution of software components are governed by their applicable licences. These Terms do not restrict rights granted by those licences.
2. Preview and availability
nkey is under development, and the first public Android test is being prepared. Features, supported platforms and release plans may change. A website illustration or interactive demonstration is not a promise that a feature is available in a released build.
The online preview simulates product flows using sample data. It is not a password manager for storing real secrets, does not connect to your devices and does not produce a usable vault backup. Changes are temporary and reset when the page reloads.
Use sample credentials when testing early builds and keep your existing password manager and independent backups until you have verified that a release meets your needs.
3. Your vault and recovery
nkey stores encrypted vault data on your devices without a hosted vault account. You are responsible for protecting your master password, backup passphrases, device credentials, recovery information and authorized devices.
- Keep your devices and software up to date, and check the destination before filling, copying or sharing credentials.
- Maintain encrypted backups in locations you control and verify that you can restore them.
- Protect exported files and their passphrases separately. Some backups include authority to enroll replacement devices, as well as vault contents.
- Store and share only information you are entitled to use.
We cannot reset your master password or reconstruct a lost vault. Without a working unlock method or a usable backup and its passphrase, your data may be permanently inaccessible. Synchronization is not a substitute for an independent backup.
4. Synchronization and shared access
Synchronization depends on connectivity, reachable peers and valid device permissions. Changes may not reach offline devices immediately. Review any conflicts surfaced by the app.
You decide which devices to link and which recipients to authorize. A recipient who can read a secret can also retain a copy. Revoking a grant, unlinking a device or deleting an item cannot erase an already exported copy or change a password at the service where it is used. If a secret has been exposed, change or revoke it with that service.
nkey is not an anonymity service. Network peers may see connection information even though vault contents are encrypted.
5. Acceptable use
Use nkey in accordance with applicable law and the rights of others. Do not use the website or services to steal credentials, access another person’s accounts or devices without authorization, distribute malware, conduct phishing, or interfere with other users or infrastructure.
Security research must respect other people’s data and authorization boundaries. Report suspected vulnerabilities to info@nkey.me without including real passwords or another person’s vault contents.
6. Your information and privacy
You retain your rights in the information you store. These Terms do not give us ownership of your vault contents. You are responsible for permissions needed to store or share information belonging to other people.
Our Privacy Policy explains local vault storage, network metadata, autofill, scanner diagnostics, website hosting and correspondence you send us. It does not replace consent where consent is required.
7. Software licences and third parties
The nkey Rust core and companion are licensed under GNU AGPL version 3 only. The Korium networking library also uses AGPL-3.0-only. Other components and dependencies are governed by the licence notices distributed with them. Consult the relevant repository and release notices before copying or redistributing software.
Nothing here limits permissions granted by an applicable open-source licence. The nkey name, logo and website materials remain subject to their respective intellectual property rights.
Operating systems, app stores, browsers, network peers and any storage or email provider you choose have their own terms and privacy practices. We do not control third-party services or guarantee their availability.
8. Availability, warranties and liability
The website, previews and services are provided “as is” and “as available” to the extent permitted by law. We do not promise uninterrupted operation, compatibility with every website or device, or freedom from defects. Features and services may be changed or discontinued.
To the extent permitted by applicable law, we exclude implied warranties and liability for indirect or consequential loss, including lost data or lost profits arising from use of the website or services. Applicable software licences contain their own warranty and liability provisions.
Mandatory protections remain in place. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded, including for intentional misconduct or gross negligence, or removes mandatory consumer rights.
9. Stopping use and changes to these terms
You may stop using nkey at any time. Export any information you need before removing local data. Remove unwanted backups and companion copies separately; uninstalling one app does not remove data from other devices or recipients.
We may restrict access to our website or services in response to unlawful use or security threats. We do not operate a central vault account that can be suspended, reset or erased on your behalf.
Updates to these Terms will be published here with a revised date and apply prospectively. Material changes will be notified, and agreement requested, where required by law. Such changes do not revoke rights already granted under applicable software licences.
10. Governing law and contact
These Terms are governed by Swiss law, subject to any mandatory protections and jurisdiction rights that apply in your place of residence. If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.
